A total of 202 older adults with pre-1064 hypertension or hypertension were followed-up for vital status and cause of death over an average of 7.6 years. Compared with combined controls, the TM group showed a 23% decrease in all-cause mortality, the studys primary outcome. Secondary analyses showed a 30% decrease in the rate of cardiovascular mortality and a 51% decrease in the rate of mortality due to cancer in the TM group compared with combined controls.RESEARCH FIELD SITE: The two published studies were originally conducted at the West Oakland Health Center, Oakland, CA, and Harvard University, Boston, MASupported in Part by National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Grant 1P50AT00082DECREASEDTwo hundred ninety-eight college students were randomly BLOOD PRESSUREassigned to either the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program AND MOODor wait-list control, with a three-month intervention period.
